It's been a while since I've written here. A lot has happened since my last post... I got a new job. I moved to a new city. Doctor Who moved on to the 12th Doctor. I got a second job. I started taking horse riding lessons. I left the new job and started a different, newer, job. Most recently: I got married. Many thanks to Paula and Mike of thisdayphotography.com for making the day so special!

I remember being bored to tears when my parents would listen to talk radio when I was little. 1040 WHO on the AM dial, with Jan Mickelson in the morning! - is the one I remember. Long. Uninteresting. And you can't change the channel because you're a kid and not the boss. Not that there was anything else interesting on the FM side... I mostly preferred to listen to songs on tape (recordings of The Music Man, Brigadoon, The Little Mermaid and VeggieTales) and sing along, although, my mother will point out that I went through a very blatant "must listen to country music all the time" phase in middle school. Sorry mom. The best thing about AM radio was that on some nights, at 9:00 PM, they would air old radio shows from the 1930s and 40s. I loooooved listening to Edgar Bergan & Charlie McCarthy, Abbott and Costello, The Life of Riley, and Fibber McGee and Molly. Now, that I am an adult, I have come to love talk radio. More specifically, NPR. I still listen and sing along to my Broadway tunes, but do I listen to NPR news and classical quite a bit. Saturdays are my favorite - with CarTalk and Wait-Wait, Don't Tell Me. I also like the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts on NPR classical on Saturday afternoons. I always learn a lot from all of those shows! (I wish I had known about the Met broadcast when I was in college. It would have helped a lot with my music history classes!) This is from September 2012. I went with my future brother-in-law to a live recording of the NPR game show "Whad'ya Know?" at UNI with host Michael Feldman. Speaking of talk radio and NPR, I heard a really interesting article on NPR yesterday that I've decided to share and write a little about! It was about childhood amnesia. Until that article, I don't think I had heard of that specific term before.
Simply put, childhood amnesia is not being able to recall memories from when you are very young. It doesn't mean that you can't recall early memories, or that you don't have them, but you probably don't have an exact memory recall of the daily minutia you experienced when you were two-years-old. Sometimes I talk a lot. I'm sure people would say that is an understatement sometimes. I'm passionate about things that I like! I get excited! I use exclamation points a lot and mean it! I found out that a coworker is watching Doctor Who for the first time with her boyfriend and they had reached the episode "Blink" in reboot Season 3. I was so excited for them I could hardly sit still because I knew what sort of a ride they were in for. I told her to come back in the morning and tell me what she thought. This is seriously one of the coolest ways to break the 4th Wall of Theatre. Seriously. Don't Blink. Needless to say, she came back with that familiar wide-eyed, paranoid Doctor Whovian look. I nodded knowingly and we started the new workday shared exciting details about our individual experiences with the episode. [Side note: Do you think it's necessary to watch the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood (at least the first season) before the end of Doctor Who Season 3? Or does it matter? Thoughts?] I miss blogging. I miss writing something goofy or poignant and sharing it with the internet. I'm mildly annoyed with myself that I didn't really fulfill my 2013 new year's resolution from last year. Regular blog posts on this blog petered out around May 2013. The last dated post here was from June. That's okay. 2014 is going to be better. No set schedule. I'm gonna post what I want, when I want. Looking back at 2013, it really didn't start off the greatest, but I think it finished pretty strong. I'm 26 years old and I've come to the realization that I don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Some people might argue that at 26 I am already a "grown up" but I still feel like I'm searching for the very "adult" situation of having a job that pays a decent amount of money and provides health insurance. It's one of those things that makes me shake my fist at the sky and demand if that is too much to ask for: Enough money to pay my bills and health insurance. Right now I am working full-time through a temp agency at a law office in town. Even though it's full-time, it's not enough to pay my bill, so I am I also working part-time on the weekends and some evenings at the local grocery store.
I feel really happy and accomplished today because it was my first day off in what seems like a really long time. In reality, it's my first day off since Memorial Day, but working 7 days a week between two jobs makes this day off all the more appreciated. I got to sleep in, have a cup of coffee and put on jeans, a t-shirt and flip-flips. (For the record, I love flip-flops and would wear them all the time, if I could. Alas, work dress codes dictate otherwise.) This afternoon I volunteered and helped with a booth at a local arts festival. Now I am relaxing at home, browsing the internet as thunder rumbles in the distance. It's been a lovely day! I got a new library card last week! This will be my 6th library card in the history of my life, which I feel is quite an accomplishment. I've been going to the library since before I can remember, so it is weird to walk in a not be recognized by the librarian. However, there is a certain type of excitement that stems from gaining a new pass to a new building filled with access to any kind of knowledge you would want to learn. I'm sure I'll get to know the librarians the longer I live here and make more use of the awesome resources. After a long stint where I rarely had time to read anything for pleasure, I have finally gotten back to reading for fun. No text books, no research articles. Just fiction and non-fiction that I choose. I rarely read just one book at a time, so I wanted to share what books I have on my plate and recommend them to you. Oregon Trail...Like many adults my age, I have very fond memories of playing Oregon Trail. The first time I ever played Oregon Trail was a demo version on a friend's Macintosh. This was from 1994 or something, although I was playing it around 1995-96. It still had the awesome pixelated graphics. The demo let you get to the first fort before it ended. I remember my parents gave my siblings and I Oregon Trail 3, which was super high-tech and included actual video clips of the "people" you could bring on your wagon train. It also was such a big program that it came on multiple discs. I remember our home computer frequently crashing as we tried to make our way to Oregon. I remember that this lady was an actress. I usually picked her to travel with my wagon train because she had a lot of money. I finally got around to making a vlog! Yay! Maybe someday I'll be able to do one of these in one take. Today is not that day - but I hope you enjoy the video anyway! Here I introduce the journal "Vs. A Journal of Choices" which I will use throughout these vlogs to make for some interesting discussion... At least I hope so, anyway. I also forgot to add pirates to the list. Pirates should definitely be a part of that obsession list... Mmmmm... Pirates... Definitely pirates...
The warmer weather is slowly coming - the snow is melting and the grass is beginning to turn green. It's lovely to walk outside and hear all the birdsongs going back and forth. A week ago I saw my first Robin of the year and I've seen many more since then. Finally the weather is beginning to reflect the calendar year. I can't wait to see the crabapple tree in bloom and smell the lilac blossoms. Everyone has their own little milestones as to what marks the "official" arrival of Spring. For some it's more of what I listed above. For others, it might be the first time they have to mow the lawn or when the tulips are in full bloom.
For me, there's one more indicator that heralds the arrival of Spring. "... Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says I'll try again tomorrow." ~Mary Anne Radmacher Life is a study in courage. At least that is what I have come to decide. It's not the shouting, going into battle against all odds-kind of courage - although that certainly has its place. The kind of courage I'm talking about is the courage that relates to taking care of yourself. Maintaining your personal integrity. It's not the showy, brassy-type of courage that inspires people into action. It's far more introverted... It's the courage that gets you out of bed in the morning and drives you to keep doing the best that you can. It's the courage of standing up for yourself. It's celebrating small achievements and milestones that might be insignificant to other people, but mean the world to you. The courage of recognizing your strengths and weaknesses. |
